Between 1471 and 1478, Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere oversaw the renovation of the hospital, built upon the preexisting structures of the Innocentian hospital, following designs by Baccio Pontelli and the sculptor Andrea Bregno. This refurbishment resulted in a new architectural complex, later known as the Corsie Sistine. These halls were adorned with a rich cycle of frescoes by the Umbrian-Latial school, commissioned by the pope himself to illustrate the history of the hospital and its founders.
